I LOVE MY GOLDEN BECAUSE..

...I love my golden retriever/cocker spaniel mix because she is so happy and playful. At 14 years old, she still acts like a puppy!

Pinky S. - MI

...he is equal parts goofy and sweet. He's great for a laugh and great for a hug! Sammy makes every day a good one.

Bethany H. - MO

... he's stable, calm, and quiet. He's a kick back and relax kind of dog that'll also get up and go when you want to. He's adaptable and kindhearted and loves everyone. He's my rock, and I wouldn't have finished college without him.

Emily S.

I love my Rottweiler/Golden Retriever Mix because he is so smart and soft!!

frequently asked questions

How much food should I feed my Golden Retriever?

Every dog has a different sweet spot. This has to do with things like age, genetics, lifestyle, digestibility and quality of their food, and any health issues. There are formulas that we and your vet use to estimate where to start, taking these things into consideration. After that, the ultimate answer comes from this question: Is your dog maintaining a healthy, lean body weight? If the answer is YES, you are feeding the perfect amount! If the answer is NO (they are getting a little too skinny or too chubby), then we need to make some gradual adjustments.

How many times should a Golden eat?

For most adults, splitting their daily recommended kibble amount into two meals is perfect.

How can I transition my Golden to BARK Food?

To transition your Golden over to BARK Food, we generally recommend transitioning Food over the course of one week, gradually phasing out the old food and introducing the new. For the first two days offer a meal that is 25% new food and 75% old food. After that, move to 50% and 50% for two days, then 75% new food and 25% old food for two more days. After that your dog should be ready to eat only their new food! During this transition you will monitor for any vomiting, diarrhea, or appetite change that would indicate your dog is having trouble with the new food. For more on transitioning dog foods see our guide here.

Why is my Golden Retriever always so hungry?

For the most part, Goldens have bottomless stomachs and will rally to beg or eat, even after consuming a full meal. So don't take their word for it. The ultimate answer for a healthy adult dog at their ideal weight will be in answering this question: "Is my dog maintaining a stable, healthy weight?" If the answer is YES, you are totally feeding enough. If this is the case but your Golden is still begging intensely, it could be due to a number of things like not feeling full (this is a volume issue rather than a calorie issue) or some health issues which mean that a quick vet check up isn't a bad idea. If they are losing weight, food might be the issue but other things could also be going on (we and you/your vet should talk about it) and if they are gaining weight, ditto. If the vet says they're healthy, just perpetually hungry, you can try adding low-calorie extras to their dinner like cooked green beans or broccoli to give them that nice "full" feeling after eating, without piling on the calories.

What do I do if my Golden Retriever eats too fast?

It is important for dogs to chew their kibble before swallowing -- this aids in proper digestion of their food, helps avoid tummy upset, decreases choking and bloat risks, etc. Making it harder to just inhale food is a good start— this can mean using a slow bowl, scattering their kibble on the kitchen floor (if you don't mind slobber), splitting their dinner into 2-4 smaller mini-dinners, etc.
